Plan your visit to Puri

Fly to Bhubaneswar or take a train to Puri, wear modest traditional clothing, leave phones and leather behind, and avoid the Anasara fortnight in June if you want darshan. The details are below.

Planning checklist

  1. Choose your dates

Check festival dates on the temple administration's festival pages. Avoid the Anasara fortnight after Snana Yatra if darshan is the goal. Book well ahead for Rath Yatra.

  2. Book travel and a place to stay

Trains and hotels fill up early in festival seasons and holidays.

  3. Pack for the temple

Modest traditional clothing. No leather. Plan to leave your phone at your hotel or at the free stands. See the dress code and rules.

  4. Choose a darshan window

Use the published timings and allow for delays.

  5. Complete the visit

Take Mahaprasad at the Ananda Bazar, and if you have time, walk the heritage corridor around the outer wall and visit the Gundicha Temple.

When to go

  • October to March is generally the most comfortable time, and the busiest for tourism.
  • April to June is hot and humid. Snana Purnima falls in this period, followed by the 15 days without darshan.
  • Rath Yatra (June or July) brings very large crowds. Read the Rath Yatra guide.
  • July to September is the monsoon, when the sea is rough.

Where to stay

  • Near the Grand Road: walkable to the temple; busy.
  • Along the beach: many hotels in every price range.
  • Temple administration accommodation: the administration lists its pilgrim accommodation on its official accommodation page. Book only through official channels.

What to wear, and what to leave behind

News reports describe a dress code enforced from 1 January 2024: shorts, half pants, torn jeans, skirts and sleeveless clothes are not allowed. Recommended clothing is a dhoti, or trousers with a shirt, for men, and a saree or salwar kameez for women.

The temple administration's list of don'ts includes footwear and leather items in and around the premises, and carrying an umbrella, mobile phone, electronic gadgets or cooked food. Free shoe and mobile stands are provided near the Lion's Gate barricade.

  • Late morning: the Ananda Bazar for Mahaprasad, and the heritage corridor around the outer wall.
  • Afternoon: the Gundicha Temple, about three kilometres along the Grand Road.
  • Evening: the beach, then darshan between about 8 and 9 PM if the schedule allows.

Common questions

How do I reach Puri?

The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, about 60 km away by road. Puri has its own railway station with long-distance trains, and frequent buses and taxis run from Bhubaneswar.

How many days do I need?

One day is enough for darshan, Mahaprasad and a walk to the beach. Two or three days lets you add Konark, Raghurajpur and Chilika Lake.

When should I avoid visiting?

If darshan is your main purpose, avoid the 15 days after Snana Yatra (usually June), when the temple administration says darshan is not possible. Festival days, weekends and holidays are the busiest.
