Alternatives

Chilika Lake

Satapada, on Chilika Lake, is about 50 km from Puri. Boat trips go out on the lagoon; winter brings migratory birds.

Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar has many old temples and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and is the usual arrival and departure point by air.

Tips

  • A car with a driver makes day two much easier.
  • Ritual times often run late, so build in slack around darshan.
  • Avoid the 15 days after Snana Yatra (usually June) if darshan is the purpose of your trip.
  • During Rath Yatra week, roads close and the town revolves around the festival; plan around it.
