About this guide

The Puri Jagannath Temple Guide is an independent, non-commercial information website about the Shree Jagannath Temple (Srimandir) in Puri, Odisha. It aims to give pilgrims and readers clear information, with sources, and to separate documented history from temple tradition.

Who writes it

The guide is written and maintained by Sai Kiran, an independent writer interested in Indian temple history, pilgrimage traditions and practical travel information. Sai Kiran is responsible for everything published on the site.

This guide is compiled from official sources, government tourism information, historical references and publicly available temple information. It does not claim the authority of a historian, priest or temple official, and it does not present personal visits or interviews as evidence.

Why it exists

People planning a visit to Puri tend to search for the same things: when the temple opens, what to wear, whether phones are allowed, how Mahaprasad works, what happens at Rath Yatra. Answers online are often scattered, out of date, or mixed with offers of paid "VIP darshan" and online puja that the temple administration itself warns against. This site tries to answer those questions in one place, in plain language, and to show where each answer comes from.

Independence

This website is not operated by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, the Government of Odisha or any servitor organisation. We do not sell darshan, pooja, prasad, accommodation or tours, we do not take commissions, and we never ask for payments.

Be careful with online puja and donation offers. The temple administration states on its official website that it never accepts donations or offerings from devotees for online puja. Use only the official website, the temple's hundis and its branch office.

How the information is put together

The full method is set out in the editorial policy and the sources page. In short:

  • Current visitor information, such as ritual timings, darshan arrangements and rules, comes first from the temple administration's own website. Where a page says a source was "checked" on a date, that source was opened and read on that date.
  • Historical statements are attributed to the temple administration, government bodies or published scholarship. Where historians differ, the page says so.
  • Legends and devotional beliefs are described respectfully and labelled as tradition or belief, not presented as historical fact.
  • Research and drafting are assisted by software tools, including AI. The author checks the published text against the listed sources and is responsible for it.

Illustrations

The site currently uses original folk-art style illustrations and diagrams, not photographs. They are artistic depictions, not images of the actual temple or deities. Photography inside the temple is not permitted.
